Mission:
M02 - The Sixteenth Rule
Location: Turbo Lift, USS Hooke
Timeline: Present
Elle had managed to step onto the turbo lift at the same time as Rhys, "Are we still on for dinner tonight?" She asked him while trying to not think about Doctor Sebastian Hayes. That was a name she'd not heard in a long time and she'd hoped she'd never hear the man's name again. However, after her dealings with Aval something told Elle that it would be impossible to get anything she wanted.
Rhys shrugged, "Yeah we're still on for dinner tonight." He told her then after studying the look on her face he spoke up once more. "You know that Doctor Hayes don't you?" He asked.
Elle looked at Rhys, "Yeah I know of him. I don't know him personally," She sighed and lowered her shoulders at the same time. She was afraid Rhys would ask her to elaborate therefore it was pointless to think she'd not have to talk about it. Besides, Elle would much rather talk to Rhys about it than anyone else anyway. "Doctor Sebastian Hayes was perhaps one of the top doctors at Starfleet Medical when I first got to the Academy.
"He was at Starfleet Medical when I was a medical student and while I didn't run into him personally, there had been whispers about him." Elle wasn't sure how much she wanted to elaborate, "Doctor Hayes was also married at one point until his wife died. Though, I don't know the full details, I do know he tried desperately to save her life at the cost of his own morals. Assuming the man had any morals to begin with."
Rhys wasn't a doctor, he was simply a scientist. "So he broke the oath?" Rhys asked unsure what the name of that oath was, but knew it meant to do no harm to the patient.
Elle nodded while biting her bottom lip, "Yeah he broke the Hippocratic Oath specifically the part about doing no harm. There was an entire medical review board and everything." She looked at Rhys for a moment and saw the general curiosity that seemed to be commonplace with the scientist. She frowned and continued to explain the situation, "Some of us students were given an assignment to go and watch the medical review board."
Rhys raised a brow, "I thought those things were private?"
Elle shrugged, "Sometimes they're private and other times not so much. This one was probably a little bit of both, Starfleet Academy wanted us to see the board first hand to learn a lesson. Not that any of us were particularly terrible people or students. The instructors simply saw this as a learning opportunity and so we went to the hearing during the entire process. He was accused of experimenting on live patients in a desperate attempt to save his wife, and when she died he continued to experiment.
"Somehow he kept his ability to stay in Starfleet and didn't lose any rank for it. They sent him off to the diplomatic corps and I thought that would be the last I'd ever hear of him." Elle told Rhys and shrugged once more, this time with her arms crossed over her chest. "I don't know what made him do it, to save his wife sure. But, from the evidence she'd been pretty healthy then suddenly became dangerously ill."
Elle looked at Rhys for a moment trying to gauge how bothered he was by that news, or if he had anything to say at all before she continued to talk. "I always thought he somehow paid off the Medical Board to keep them from removing his ability to practice medicine. The man is not only dangerous, but he's also quite insane."
Rhys listened to Elle talking about this man, "And you think he's going to be a problem when he gets here?"
Elle shrugged, "I don't know. I don't think anyone really knows what he's capable of anymore, but I'll be damned if I let him in sickbay. I don't want him experimenting on my crew," She told Rhys. "I'd rather just stay as far away from him as possible, I don't even understand why Starfleet thought he needed to be on the ship in the first place." She added the last part because in her mind the ship already had a medical staff in the first place.
Rhys nodded, "I'm sure they had their reasons. It sounds like he doesn't have much leeway to practice medicine anymore and is really just there for emergency purposes. They probably don't have access to anyone else, honestly I've never heard of a diplomatic team having a medical officer assigned." He looked at her, "Have you ever heard of that?"
Elle nodded, "There are medical officers that go to the diplomatic corps, but typically they are residency students on their first year. Most like myself go to Starfleet Medical and some go to ships as well, but a Lieutenant Commander with years of medical experience is unheard of sure." She nodded and looked at the deck for a moment, "I think they were just hoping he'd go away. But, the whole thing happened three years ago and he's still around apparently."
Rhys wondered the same thing, "That was probably their end goal, he may not be gotten rid of so easily and there may be details that we aren't aware of yet. Plus he did lose his wife so Starfleet Medical's review board may have thought it prudent to give him another chance."
"Maybe?" Elle questioned rhetorically, "Can we not talk about him at dinner?" She asked and looked back toward Rhys.
Rhys could tell Elle was uncomfortable with this, "Certainly," He added. Rhys considered suggesting that she talk to the Captain about her discomfort. He opened his mouth to say something then hesitated for a moment, "Did you think about talking to the Captain?"
Elle shrugged, "I don't think the Captain is all that pleased about Doctor Hayes either after the staff meeting. I'm sure he'll look into it now that we've mentioned it." She stepped out as soon as the doors to the turbo lift opened. "I'll see you at dinner." She said with a weak smile then disappeared around the corner.
