Aval was born on Vulcan in 2358, four years after her brother Torvan. She grew up fascinated by how emotions and feelings made other cultures and species interact with each other. Despite the need by her society to repress their feelings and emotions, Aval continued to have a distinct interest in these things. By the time she was twenty years old she had decided on what she wanted to do.

At first her decision to join Starfleet and go to the academy in order to get her Doctoral in Psychology was purely experimental. As her time at the Academy went on, Aval's sense of desire to help others slowly increased. Aval's curiosity in emotions also increased and so the long running experiment steadily became a potential career choice.

She was assigned to Starfleet Headquarters helping people get through post traumatic stress. Aval even specialized in that field, she proved herself to be a capable psychologist and counselor for many Starfleet personnel who had suffered from this. Once her time in training was over she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Aval was given her own practice on board the USS Hooke where she'd been assigned to serve as the ship's primary counselor. In 2388 she departed from Starfleet Headquarters and arrived on the ship, which was her first permanent assignment. Her experiment into the field was no longer an experiment, but a full career choice by that point.
